Sure, we all clean our teeth every day, but how often do you think about strengthening them? And how often do you visit your local health center for regularly checkup by a dentist? Keeping your teeth healthy and strong is just as important as keeping them clean, and you can do this just by thinking about the food that you eat. It’s as simple as adding some of the following superfoods to your diet.
Okay so water might not technically be considered a superfood, but it’s super right? There’s the obvious fact that water keeps us alive; but in addition to that, water rinses any harmful particles out of our teeth, keeping our mouths clean. Hydration is also key in keeping every part of your body functioning like a well-oiled machine!
2. Dark, Leafy Greens
Leafy greens like spinach and kale are full of fiber. Chompin’ on these greens will clean your teeth and aid saliva production, while also depositing vitamins like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and iron. Popeye was onto something with these one folks.
Similarly, to the leafy greens, the act of chewing carrots alone is hugely beneficial to the strength and cleanliness of your teeth. Theses bright orange veggies are packed with nutrients. Haven’t you ever heard, the brighter the veggie, the better for you?
4. Green Tea
There are a reason people have been drinking green tea for centuries. This amazing drink is full of antioxidants which act like armor for your cells and your teeth. Did you know drinking green tea can also prevent bad breath? You might want to do your friends and coworkers a favor and sip on some green tea between meals.
You might want to have some green tea on hand to minimize your garlic breath, but this stuff sure does taste good. It’s also an antibacterial warrior! Garlic battles germs, keeping your gut — and your mouth — healthy and strong.
6. Fermented Foods like Sauerkraut
One of the best ways to ward off bad bacteria is to fight it with good bacteria, and that’s exactly what probiotics are! The fermentation process creates live (trust me, in this case you want to eat something that’s alive) microbiota work hard in your body to keep out diseases like gum disease.
7. Bone Broth
Collagen is the most important protein in our bodies and keeps us looking pretty on the outside and strong on the inside. Bone broth has been used for ages as a warm, comforting, and healing treat for our bodies. Bone broth is made by boiling animal bones and in thus extracting all the beneficial nutrients from them. The collagen in bone broth solidifies and strengthens the structure of teeth.
8. Dairy Products
Another tried and true bone strengthener is milk. Milk and other dairy products like cheese provide crazy levels of calcium that get right down to your bones to give them strength. You do know that teeth are bones, right?
This one may come as a surprise, but it’s because we’re talking Vitamin D. Of course, catching some rays is still the best way to consume Vitamin D, fish is one of the top foods you can eat to get this nutrient into your body. In order to absorb all the calcium, you’re eating as successfully as possible, you need this vitamin.
10. Whole Grains
Your teeth are not alone in your mouth — they depend on other things like your gums to stay healthy and in place. Eating whole grains reduces the risk of gum disease and gum inflammation. Whole grains also contain that ever-important fiber!
This list doesn’t sound so bad does it? In fact, I can think of a few delicious meals that you could make with these ingredients. Keep these superfoods in mind when you want to improve your dental health. And remember, having strong teeth requires more than just a toothbrush!
